In his book The Ambient Century, Mark Prendergast discusses a wide range of music (including 1900s symphonic, rock, jazz & hip-hop) which form parts of his surprisingly expansive definition of Ambient. Prendergast's book contains an appendix entitled "Twentieth-Century Ambience - The Essential 100 Recordings".
