Comprising two starkly-contrasting tracks, the pulsating Rum Jungle and the dream-like, slow building Daylights, Mindset is a kaleidoscopic offering which sees The Necks drawing on their heritage in their customarily tangential way. Polyrhythmic pulses imbue the pieces with a powerful forward drive, over which distant-sounding piano riffs team with throbbing bass and drums, all interwoven with sparking electronics, churning Hammond organs and noise guitar. Drummer/percussionist Tony Buck elaborates: ‘Mindset shares some elements in common with our previous album Silverwater [2009], mostly in some mixing approaches and rhythmic devices; a reflection of our ongoing fascination with polymetric material and varying simultaneous pulses... but it's a whole other thing again, and what's more, the two tracks are very different from each other - Rum Jungle displays the live approach of the trio of piano, bass, and drums a lot more; Daylights features a bed of electronics and little sounds that slowly converge and coalesce into a multi-layered, multi-tempo, swirling soundscape.’ Densely packed with ideas, Mindset shows The Necks, after 24 years and 16 albums, to be as inspired as ever.
